Background Information

HESX1 (Homeobox gene expressed in stem cells 1) is a homeobox transcriptional repressor that was initially isolated from murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Hesx1 is crucial for proper forebrain and pituitary development in both mice and humans, and inactivating mutations in HESX1 underlie septo-optic dysplasia.
